Where can you see performances by top high school artists? – Orange County Register

Awards season has started for high school performers. Get your tickets now for one of the shows listed below if you want to see some of the best high school actors, singers, dancers and musicians live on stage.

The JRAYs

The John Raitt Awards for Youth annually honors schools and students from Orange and Los Angeles counties for achievement in musical theater. Actors from the top productions are invited to perform a song from their show at the awards ceremony. Top male and female performers of the year are given $1,500 and sent to New York for a one-week intensive workshop with Broadway professionals that includes a session with Broadway casting directors. This year, seven $1,000 scholarships for seniors will also be awarded.

When: 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20

The Cappies Gala

The Cappies gives out awards for musicals and plays to students and schools exclusively from Orange County. Student critics are also honored. Nominees for best play, musical and song are invited to perform a number from their show at the event.

When: 6 p.m. Sunday, May 21

Where: City National Grove of Anaheim, 2200 E Katella Ave., Anaheim

The Spotlight Awards

The Spotlight Awards, hosted by the Music Center in Los Angeles, honors acting, ballet, classical instrumental, classical voice, jazz instrumental, non-classical dance and non-classical voice students from throughout Southern California. Two grand-prize finalists in each category are awarded $5,000 and invited to perform at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

When: 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 23

The MACY Awards

The Music and Arts Commendation for Youth annually honors schools and students from throughout Southern California for achievement in musical theater. Participants in the top productions of the season are invited to perform a song from their show at the MACY awards ceremony. Top male and female performers of the year are invited to New York to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, known as the Jimmy Awards, hosted by the Broadway League.
