Square 1 Theatrics Nominated for Seven Tony Awards for Broadway’s “Come From Away”

Jay Krottinger and Ryan Jude Tanner of Square 1 Theatrics, co-producers of Come From Away, have been nominated for seven Tony Awards.

Nominations come in the following categories:

Best Musical

Best Book of a Musical, Irene Sankoff and David Hein

Best Original Score, David Hein and Irene Sankoff

Best Direction of a Musical, Christopher Ashley

Best Choreography, Kelly Devine

Best Performance by a Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical, Jenn Colella

Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Howell Binkley

Come From Away is based on the events following the tragedy of 9/11, when 38 planes with over 6500 passengers were stranded in a remote town in Newfoundland. Locals opened their hearts and homes to the travelers, building a new and extraordinary “community” in the days that brought them together.

The Tony Award is the highest theatre honor in the United States. In announcing these nominations, Krottinger noted that the production has already received many other award nominations as well. “We knew that this musical was going to be something truly special,” he said. “Audiences have confirmed this by the way they have taken it to their hearts. It is gratifying that so many others in the theatre community recognize this as well.” Come From Away has been nominated for seven Outer Critic Awards and nine Drama Desk Awards, with both organizations including nominations for Outstanding Musical. The Drama League has nominated it for Outstanding Production of a Broadway Production.
