A 2.5-foot tall panchaloha idol, weighing around 40kg, was stolen from a temple in a village near Alangulam in Tirunelveli district.

MADURAI: A 2.5-foot tall panchaloha idol, weighing around 40kg, was stolen from a temple in a village near Alangulam in Tirunelveli district.

The theft that took place at Bhadrakali Amman Temple in Keezha Pattamudayarpuram came to light on Monday morning. Villagers found the doors of the temple open in the morning. They entered the temple and found that idol had been stolen. Silver ornaments on the idol were also stolen.

Police were alerted, and a team rushed to the spot along with a sniffer dog and carried out preliminary investigations. A scientific team too swung into action to collect fingerprints.

A case was yet to be registered as police were waiting to get expert opinion to ascertain the value of the stolen idol.
