Tracy McGrady is back in the NBA. The seven-time All-Star signed with the San Antonio Spurs for the rest of the season on Tuesday. McGrady has famously never made it past the first round of the playoffs, but with the Spurs set to win the second seed in the Western Conference, that could change this year. After a couple of forgettable seasons with the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks, it’s not clear how much he has left in the tank, but the NBA is always a better place when T-Mac is in it. Remember, this guy used to be one of the most explosive scorers in the NBA. It’s never a bad time to revisit his best work, but in light of his signing with the Spurs, it feels right to break out one of the most fun highlight reels in recent memory.
McGrady was a human highlight reel from the moment he made his NBA debut in 1997. Together with his teammate and cousin Vince Carter, T-Mac made the Toronto Raptors must-see TV for basketball fans. It’s easy to forget his performance in the 2000 dunk contest, because Carter’s was one of the all-time greats. But T-Mac was no slouch there, either. He unleashed four spectacular dunks that put most of the last decade’s contestants to shame. No props, no gimmicks, just endless creativity and ridiculous body control:
T-Mac hit his peak after joining the Orlando Magic in 2000. He had a reputation as a scorer, and he could put the ball in the basket as well as anyone else in the league. But this 46-point, 10-rebound, 13-assist triple-double from 2003 proved he was more than just a shooter:
McGrady scored a career-high 62 points against the Washington Wizards in 2004, during his final season with the Magic. This is a jaw-dropping display of speed and creativity from someone who could get to the basket anytime he wanted at the height of his powers:
McGrady made a name for himself in that 2000…
