The European Union message to the ethno-religious minorities in Iraq, and those seeking asylum in Europe in general, is that they should stay in their country and not risk their lives through illegal routes. EU Ambassador to Iraq Patrick Simmonet told Rudaw in an interview that the EU is not facilitating the migration of ethnic or religious minorities.
He said that the EU has sent to Iraq millions of euros worth of humanitarian aid to improve people’s lives especially in areas liberated from ISIS and to address issue that may push people to migrate.
Mr. Simonnet, can you tell us the amount of aid the EU gave to Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region last year? And how much is it going to be for 2017?
