A TROPICAL low is intensifying off the northern West Australian coast, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the Pilbara.

A tropical cyclone warning has been issued as wind gusts of 120km/h are being whipped up near the low’s centre, about 220km west northwest of the town of Karratha.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a blue alert from Roebourne to Ningaloo, which includes the towns of Karratha and Exmouth.

“The tropical low should strengthen and may reach tropical cyclone intensity on Saturday afternoon or evening,” the BoM said on Saturday.

Squally thunderstorms are expected along Pilbara coast throughout the day.

Heavy rainfall is also likely along the coast, with a flood warning current for parts of the Kimberley and Pilbara.
