Store your birth certificate, marriage contract, identification cards, and other private papers in a sealed plastic bag. It is easy to retrieve them this way. If you live in flood prone areas, you have to make sure to keep these important documents in waterproof cases.
Experts suggest that your emergency kit should be placed in a bag that you can easily pull out immediately when in need. You can also add other items into the kit that you think are too important to live without.

An emergency kit is not something you can keep for a long time. In the case of the canned goods, check their expiry dates and consume them before their expiration. The other items in the kit should be replaced every year.
